The Sockers will look to close the gap on the Western leading Dallas Sidekicks with a victory at home. The Sockers are currently in the middle of a four-game losing streak.

Milwaukee Wave at Kansas City Comets

Kansas City joins Philadelphia as the only teams in the League to defeat the Wave more than once this season. The Comets are 1-1 against Milwaukee at Kemper Arena in 2003-04.

The Force continues their draw of Western division foes Sunday night when Dallas comes to town. Cleveland owns the second worst home record in the League, and faces a Dallas team on a two-game winning streak.

DJ Horvath made 14 saves on 17 shots in goal for the Sidekicks, while Hector Mireles stopped 10 of 17 for Monterrey.

Carlos Farias then gave Baltimore an 8-8 tie, and David Bascome scored back-to-back goals in less than four minutes to put the Blast ahead, 10-8. Pat Morris scored a sixth-attacker goal with 21 seconds remaining in the game to pull the KiXX within one point, 10-9, but the comeback stopped there. Scott Hileman made 13 saves on 22 shots faced. Stuart Dobson took the loss for the KiXX, making 10 saves on 20 shots.

The Force put the game away with three second-half tallies. Joel Bailey scored the first insurance goal at 2:36 of the third quarter, and Hector Marinaro put in a restart goal at 12:45. Chris Morman snapped a 7-7 tie at 13:47 of the fourth quarter, and Howes capped the win with his fourth goal of the game, at 14:37. Howes has 16 points in five games against Kansas City this season. Jamar Beasley equalized for the Comets at 5:10, but the Wave closed out the half with unanswered goals by Howes (9:14) and Todd Dusosky (10:23) for a 4-2 advantage. Joe Reiniger boosted that lead to 5-2 at 8:13 of the third quarter. Kansas City's Brian Soell took only 27 seconds to respond to Reiniger's goal, and Anthony Maher pulled the Comets to within one point (5-4) at 11:02. Howes gave Milwaukee the last word of the period, however, scoring at 12:23 to leave the Wave up 6-4 with 15 minutes to play.

In a back-and-forth affair, Denison Cabral's score at 9:23 of the second started a three-goal run that continued into the fourth quarter and proved too much for San Diego to overcome. Walker scored the only goal of the third quarter, at 2:30, and Tschantret finished off an assist from Chris Handsor 34 seconds into the fourth to leave the Blast up 7-4. Blast's Scott Hileman made 14 saves on 21 chances, and collected a pair of assists. Victor Nogueira took the loss for the 11-16 Sockers, stopping seven of 16 shots.

Sockers Mariano Bollella took that point back at 3:23, and the Sockers surged ahead with goals by Paul Dougherty at 8:22 and Bollella at 3:25 and 9:40 of the second stanza. Pat Morris started the KiXX comeback 2:15 before the intermission, and Kevin Sloan hammered home two goals in a 1:07 span to tie the score before the half. Sloan completed his hat trick at 8:34 of the third quarter. Philly goalkeeper Stuart Dobson faced 19 shots and made 13 saves while the Sockers' Riley Swift stopped 13 of 20 shots.

The lead lasted only 51 seconds as Chris Morman then tied the match with the first of four unanswered Milwaukee goals. Todd Dusosky gave the Wave a 2-1 lead before intermission, and Howes scored at 6:31 and 9:12 of the second quarter to boost Milwaukee's lead to 4-1. Nick Vorberg posted the win in goal, with 17 saves on 20 chances. Brett Phillips went 9-for-16 for the Steamers, and Nando Hernandez allowed three goals on as many shots in 10:42 of relief. (more)

Notes: Dallas downed Western Division rival Monterrey 10-3 on Friday night at home, and enter the week with a five-game lead over second-place San Diego. The Sidekicks' magic number to clinch the division title or a wildcard playoff berth is three. Dallas activated David Doyle, who has scored 33 points in 21 games this season, from injured reserve this week. In his absence, Martin Nash (37 points, 12th overall) assumed the team lead in scoring. Still sidelined with injury is goalkeeper Sagu, who ranks second in the MISL with a 4.34 goals against average. DJ Horvath has gone 2-2 with a 4.45 GAA and .736 save percentage in his first four games for Dallas. The Sidekicks travel to Monterrey to face the Fury on Wednesday night, and head to Cleveland on Sunday.

Notes: The Fury named Erich Geyer as head coach on Sunday. Geyer, who coached the CISL's Monterrey La Raza from 1993-2000 and led the Harrisburg Heat to a 15-21 record in 2002-03, marked his Fury debut with a 5-4 overtime win against Cleveland on Sunday night. The win came on the heels of a 10-3 loss in Dallas on Friday; Genoni Martinez served as interim coach for that game, in place of the fired Andres Carranza. Monterrey is still alive in the playoff race, two games out of the final wild card spot entering the week. In the team's favor, the Fury will play nine of its final 10 regular season games at Arena Monterrey.

Notes: San Diego lost two road games by a total of two goals (10-9 in Baltimore on Friday, 7-6 in Philadelphia on Sunday) over the weekend, falling five full games behind Dallas in the West. The Sockers are still in contention for the West title (Dallas' magic number to clinch is three) and currently hold the final wild card spot in the playoff race. Leading scorer Paul Wright is tied for 15th in the League with 35 points. Defender Sean Bowers leads the MISL with 70 blocks. Victor Nogueira is fourth overall with a 4.88 goals against average and ranks third with 330 saves. The Sockers play twice at home this week, against Cleveland on Thursday and St. Louis (who trail the Sockers by a half-game in the playoff race) on Sunday. (more)
LEAGUE NOTES
- The Monterrey Fury named Erich Geyer, who led the Harrisburg Heat to a 15-21 record in 2002-03, as head coach on Sunday, March 7. Geyer earned an overtime victory, 5-4 over Cleveland, in his debut. The native of Germany coached the Monterrey La Raza of the CISL/WISL from 1993-2000, winning three titles. He has been involved in an amazing 14 championships as a player, assistant coach, and head coach in his indoor soccer career. Geyer joins Cleveland's Omid Namazi as recently appointed MISL coaches.
- Milwaukee's Greg Howes has posted three consecutive four-goal games, the first time in Wave history that the feat has been accomplished. Howes, the MISL's leading scorer, has scored 22 goals and 26 points over his last eight games, building a firm lead in the 2003-04 Spalding Scoring Champion race as the season winds down.
- The MISL announced last Friday the rescheduled game dates and start times for four games originally scheduled to take place at Arena Monterrey in January and February. Those contests were postponed due to circumstances beyond the League's control. A fifth game that was originally scheduled to take place on Friday, March 19 (San Diego at Monterrey), has also been moved to Thursday, March 18. The 2003-04 MISL regular season will now last one day longer than originally planned, as St. Louis will play in Monterrey on Monday, April 5.
