MISL names players of the week

March 7, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Brian Rowland, Baltimore Blast

Brian Rowland saved 10 of 14 shots in Baltimore's 5-4 win over the Philadelphia KiXX last Tuesday. The 24-year-old was at his best as the Blast roared back from a 4-2 fourth-quarter deficit, turning away five of six shots in the stanza. The former first-round draft pick out of UMBC improved to 8-6 with the win and is now tied for third in the MISL with a .735 save percentage. Rowland was also named Goalkeeper of the Week on December 27 and January 17.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mali Walton, St. Louis Steamers

Mali Walton earns his first honors of the season thanks to a fine all-around performance in a 6-5 win versus Milwaukee last Thursday. The 6-1, 180-pound defender recorded an assist on the Steamers' first goal of the game (from Matt Caution), and accounted for the game-winning tally at 2:57 of the fourth quarter. He also blocked a shot in the contest. Walton, whose only other goal of the season came on January 28, has been a consistent defensive presence for St. Louis all season long (29 blocks in 28 games). The 32-year-old becomes the second Steamer to earn the Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Greg Howes, Milwaukee Wave

With three goals and four points in two games last week, Greg Howes continued a torrid hot streak that has propelled him into the MISL scoring lead. In a 6-5 loss at St. Louis last Thursday, Howes scored a goal and assisted on another. The 27-year-old then accounted for a pair of scores, including the game-winner at 9:39 of overtime, in a 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia KiXX on Sunday. With 16 goals and 23 points over his last seven games, Howes has assumed the top spot in the Spalding Scoring Championship race with 46 points, and now leads the league with 26 goals. This is the third Offensive Player of the Week selection of the season (and second in a row) for the defending Scoring Champion.
