Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The Fort Myers Miracle completed a three-game sweep of the Jupiter Hammerheads by winning Thursday's finale 4-1.
Starter Matt Summers pitched in an out of trouble in 4 2/3 innings and A.J. Achter and Michael Tonkin dominated with six strikeouts over the final 4 1/3.
Danny Rams lined a clutch two-run single in the seventh to add important insurance runs.
Marcell Ozuna put the Hammerheads on top early by bashing his 19th home run of the season, a solo shot, in the first inning off of Matt Summers.
The Miracle answered right back in the bottom of the frame. Daniel Santana led off with a grounder to short that Terrence Dayleg threw into the Jupiter dugout which moved Santana to second. Lance Ray notched his ninth RBI of the series with a sac fly that plated Santana from third two batters later.
Santana broke the tie in the second. Andy Leer singled with one out and took second on a ground out. Santana then singled to center to score Leer and put the Miracle in front 2-1.
The Hammerheads had their chances against Summers, as their leadoff man reached base in four of the first five innings. However, the Miracle played nifty defense to hold the lead. In the fourth, Dayleg lined out to Ray in right and Aaron Dudley tried to tag and score from third. Ray's throw home was slightly up the line, but catcher Kyle Knudson was able to reach out and swipe Dudley with a tag to end the inning and preserve the lead.
With runners on first and second in the fifth, A.J. Achter came on in relief and got Ryan Fisher to pop out to short for the final out.
Rams gave the Miracle breathing room in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs he hit a screamer off of Scott McGough that got past Fisher at third. Angel Morales and Anderson Hidalgo scored to make it 4-1.
Tonkin struck out two batters in the eighth after replacing Achter and he pitched around a two-out double in the ninth to earn his fifth save.
Achter picked up the win and Zach Neal took the loss. Neal gave up two runs, one earned, on seven hits in five innings.
The Miracle (51-64, 23-25) return to Hammond Stadium on Friday at 7:05 p.m. to open a three-game series with the St. Lucie Mets. Join the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the broadcast on miraclebaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
