Minnesota Swarm's Logan Schuss Wins February Rookie of the Month Honors

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - On Sunday Feb. 23, Minnesota Swarm rookie forward Logan Schuss sent a message to the National Lacrosse League (NLL) by netting seven points (5g, 2a), to help his team defeat the Philadelphia Wings. That message appears to have been received, as the league announced on Thursday afternoon that Schuss has been named the NLL's Rookie of the Month for February, the Swarm's first league recognition of 2014.

"We're going to see more of these kinds of successes with Logan," Swarm coach Joe Sullivan said. "He's just starting to come into his own, he's got a comfort level with the players and his surroundings, and now he knows what the league is all about. You are going to see some great things coming from him."

Schuss, 23, has solidified himself as one of Minnesota's most lethal offensive threats, putting up 23 points (11g, 12a) in five games in February. The month was highlighted by his season-high seven points in Philadelphia, including a fourth quarter natural hat-trick that completed a second-half rally and secured the Swarm's second win of the season.

Overall this season the left-hander from Ladner, British Columbia ranks third on the Swarm with 31 points (16g, 15a) in nine games, trailing only F Callum Crawford (41 points) and T Jordan MacIntosh (36 points). Schuss is tied for the team lead in goals with MacIntosh, but stands alone at the top in terms of power play goals (7), shots (103) and shots-on-goal (81).

So far this season, Schuss has lived up to the hefty expectations that come with being the No. 1 overall selection in the 2013 NLL Entry Draft. Schuss paces all rookies in goals, power play goals, shots and shots-on-goal, while ranking second among NLL greenhorns in points, assists (15), and loose balls (41). In the points and assists category, Schuss trails only Vancouver F Tyler Digby (16g, 19a), who was the recipient of January's Rookie of the Month award.

Even more impressive than his production, according to Sullivan, is the fact that Schuss has been doing so against the best the NLL has to offer each night.

"Whether he's playing a physical game or a finesse game he's earned the respect of the defenders he plays against every single night; he's drawing the best defenders from each team and he's risen himself to the challenge," Sullivan explained. "He comes through when great players do and I think you will see more of that."

The Swarm hope Schuss' torrid offensive play can carry over into the team's March schedule, which kicks off with three pivitol games against East Division rivals Buffalo and Toronto. Minnesota (2-7) takes the field next in Buffalo as they take on the Bandits (6-2) at First Niagara Place at 6:30 CT on Saturday, March 8.
