Minnesota Swarm News Release
SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The National Lacrosse League's (NLL) Minnesota Swarm will be hosting its fifth annual Native American Heritage Day this Sunday afternoon as team hosts the Philadelphia Wings at 2 p.m. CT for their home opener at Xcel Energy Center.
"Native American Heritage Day is always a special event for Swarm fans, and one of our favorite traditions," Swarm co-owner and president Andy Arlotta said. "It's important to recognize Minnesota's tribal communities and share the history of lacrosse with our fans. We're looking forward to welcoming many tribal communities to The Hive on Sunday for our fifth annual Native American Heritage Day."
Events planned for Native American Heritage Day include a traditional drum circle presentation and a special traditional Native American lacrosse game during halftime between members of the Oneida and Menominee Tribes. Throughout the game, local Native youth players and their reservations that have started lacrosse initiatives recently will also be recognized.
The Swarm are proud to operate a week-long summer lacrosse camp, called Lax-4-Life, on the Fond du Lac Reservation for Native boys and girls. The camp has garnered national attention, including praise from the Obama Administration for its effort in helping provide Native youth with a healthy lifestyle option. Led by the Swarm players, coaches and staff, the Lax-4-Life program enable kids to learn the game of lacrosse and spread it to their tribal communities.
Native American Heritage Day will also include a book signing by Swarm season ticket holder Art Coulson for his book The Creator's Game before the Swarm and Wings face off. Fans can come early to visit with Coulson in the Xcel Energy Center concourse, and purchase his account of an 11-year-old who discovers his American Indian culture and history through playing lacrosse.
