Minnesota Lynx Secure No. 2 Pick in WNBA Draft
November 11, 2022 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - Minnesota Lynx News Release
Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Lynx secured the second overall selection in the 2023 WNBA Draft. Minnesota Lynx and All-WNBA forward Napheesa Collier represented the Lynx tonight in the 2023 WNBA Draft Lottery presented by State Farm. The 2023 WNBA Draft will be held on Monday, April 10.
"We are excited to land the second overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft," said Lynx Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Cheryl Reeve. "This selection will no doubt be an important part of our future as we shape the next era of Lynx basketball."
Entering the lottery, Minnesota had a 14.5% chance of securing the second pick. This marks just the second time in franchise history that Minnesota will pick second in the draft, the only other time it has happened was in 2010 when the Lynx drafted Monica Wright.
In 2010, Minnesota had the No. 1 pick after winning the lottery and the No. 2 pick originally belonged to the Connecticut Sun. However, the No. 1 pick was a part of the blockbuster trade that brought Hall of Famer Lindsay Whalen to Minnesota in exchange for Renee Montgomery and the 2010 No.1 pick.
The second pick in the WNBA Draft has produced several basketball legends over the years, including Sylvia Fowles (2008), Cappie Pondexter (2006) and Hall of Famers Swin Cash (2002) and Yolanda Griffith (1999). Most recently Satou Sabally (2020), AD Durr (2019) and Kelsey Mitchell (2018) all joined the league as the second overall pick.
