Alexandria Blizzard News Release

(Alexandria, MN) The Minnesota Blizzard closed out the 2004 portion of its regular season schedule Thursday evening, December 30th at the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria, attempting a fourth straight win. A determined defensive effort helped the Helena Bighorns, in their 3-0 win over Minnesota.

After yielding 10 goals to the Blizzard and 79 shots in two Minnesota wins December 26th and 27th, Helena clamped down, and limited the Blizzard attack to 25 shots in Thursday's game. Both goalies were outstanding, between the pipes. Clay Nestor (Glenwood, MN), playing in just his second game following a bout with mononucleosis, stopped 34 of 36 Helena shots that came his way. But he was outdone by Bighorns goalie Chad Beiswenger, who turned aside all 25 Blizzard shots, to earn the shutout.

The Thursday loss, combined with subsequent Fargo-Moorhead victories over Helena on New Year's weekend, knocked the Blizzard out of first place, in the North American Hockey League's Western Division. The Blizzard, Helena, and the F-M Jets have all been in and out of the top spot numerous times, in the past two months. The Billings Bulls are lurking close behind, just six points out of first place, in the West.

Ahead, for the Blizzard: A home game this coming Friday, January 7th, at the Runestone Community Center. The Blizzard will host the Bismarck Bobcats, in a 7:00 PM start. This will be the finale, in a six-game home stand for the Blizzard. Then, it's another eight day break for Minnesota, before heading out to Bismarck on Saturday night, January 15th, for a 7:00 game.

Happy New Year, from the Blizzard! Hope all of your 2005 resolutions come true!
