Miners win series over Fightin' Falcons

MESA, ARIZONA -The Mesa Miners (14-9) won their third straight series and improved their record to a season best five games over .500, as they beat the Surprise Fightin' Falcons 5-4 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.

By beating the Fightin' Falcons (11-13), the Miners remain tied for first place with the Yuma Scorpions in the Arizona Division. Mesa finished their longest homestand of the season with an 8-3 record.

The scoring started in the home half of the fifth inning when Arizona player of the week Digz Edwards singled home the first run of the evening. Marcus Jensen added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make the score 2-0. Surprise then rallied back scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a 2-run double by centerfielder Billy Brown off of Miners reliever Mark Goodman. The resilient Miners then answered the bell again in the home half of the seventh when Adam Bonner hit an RBI single, followed by Paul Powell's RBI double off of the wall in left field. Surprise added one run to tie the game in the eighth when Greg Stevens hit a sacrifice fly off of reliever Kelly Johnson. The run allowed by Johnson was his first run allowed all season. Cleatus Davidson added an insurance run for the Miners in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly.

The winning pitcher for Mesa was Johnson (1-0) who blew his first save of the season but picked up his first win. Losing pitcher for Surprise was reliever Ignacio Estrada Jr. (1-2) who suffered his second loss of the season.

The Miners have a day off on Monday before heading to Long Beach to take on the Armada for a three-game series. After Long Beach, the Miners will head to Yuma to take on the Scorpions for another three-game series.
