Miners Resign OF/DH Ken Gregory

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners and manager Mike Pinto have resigned outfielder/designated hitter Ken Gregory. The 2013 season will be Gregory's third season as a Miner. Gregory was a free agent after the 2012 season and had offers to join a number of teams. Gregory is a former 26th round draft pick of the Texas Rangers in 2006.

"I am very excited to have Kenny back with us", said Pinto. "He has had some monster hits for us in the last two years including some game changing hits in the playoffs and championship series. Kenny continues to get better and better and we look forward to him having a big part of our team this season."

Gregory had a strong 2012 campaign. In 87 games for the Miners, Gregory batted .277 with six home runs and 43 runs batted in. His six home runs were fifth on the team, five more then he hit in 2011. His 43 RBI's were third on the team, 25 more then he had for the Miners in 2011.

Gregory registered 85 hits in 2012, 18 more hits then he had for the Miners in 2011. His 85 hits were fourth on the team. Gregory hit 23 doubles, which led the Miners in 2012.

Gregory has proved to come up in big situations for the Miners in his career. Miners fans will remember Gregory's finest moment in 2012 in game two of the divisional series against the Traverse City Beach Bums. Gregory hit the go-ahead and eventual game winning solo home run in the top of the 10th inning off Beach Bums reliever Matt Miller. The Miners would win the game 5-4 and take a 2-0 series lead over Traverse City. In 2011 against the River City Rascals in game one of the divisional series, Gregory hit a go-ahead three run home run in the top of the 9th inning off Rascals reliever Derrick Miramontes. The Miners would win the game 9-7 and take a 1-0 series lead over River City.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
