Mesa Miners News Release

MESA, ARIZONA - The Mesa Miners staved off a ninth inning rally by the San Diego Surf Dawgs to break a three-game losing streak, winning 4-3 on Saturday night at HoHoKam Park.

Manny Ayala (7-2) had another quality start, going 8.1 innings surrendering three runs on five hits. Ayala struck out ten Surf Dawg batters and walked one in route to his fifth consecutive victory. Newly-acquired pitcher, Kevin Sheredy, secured the final two outs for his first Golden Baseball League save. Donovan Graves (3-2) picked up the loss for San Diego.

Mesa scored in the first when Cleatus Davidson came home on a Paul Powell RBI-single. The Miners added two runs in the third inning courtesy of back-to-back RBI-singles by Davidson (scoring lead-off hitter Marcus Knight after a one-out double) and Powell (scoring Davidson from 2nd after he stole his second base of the evening).

Adam Bonner scored what turned out to be the eventual game-winning run after driving a towering solo homerun to right field in the fourth inning. Bonner snapped a mini-slump with his fourth homerun of the season.

San Diego scored in the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Rickey Henderson that scored Tony Garcia. In the fourth, Surf Dawg left-fielder Seth Pietsch led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI-groundout by Scott Goodman. San Diego made it a nail-bitter in the ninth after Pietsch reached on a Julius Thames fielding error at second base. Pietsch scored the third Surf Dawg run after Nick Guerra knocked an RBI-single off of Ayala. Sheredy would enter the game and retire Goodman and Cody Clark to close out the game.

Mesa and San Diego play the series finale Sunday night, with a first pitch at 6:05. The probable starters are Adam Johnson (3-0, 2.79) for the Surf Dawgs and Jon Uhl (4-1, 3.19) for the Miners.
