Cunningham then settled in and pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one additional run and three total hits, leaving in line for the win.

But in the eighth, Zac Westcott entered in relief of Cunningham, and Lake Erie scored two runs in the frame on an RBI triple by Bryan De La Rosa and a sacrifice fly by Brody Wofford, tying the score again at 4-4. Kyle Hinton (0-3)worked around a leadoff double for a scoreless ninth, and after Neville missed a game-winning homer in the bottom half by inches, the game went to a tenth inning. Connor Oliver's RBI triple then made it 5-4 Lake Erie, sending the game to the bottom half against rookie left-hander Paul Perez (1-0).

Southern Illinois got the tying run to third base in the frame, and the winning run at first base on Walters' walk with two outs. Jared Mang then drove a ball to the left field corner that also missed being a game-winning home run by inches before he grounded out to second base to end the game.
