Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have signed former Royals prospect Darian Sandford.
The Kansas City Royals drafted Sandford, a switching hitting outfielder from St. Louis in 2010. Baseball America named Sandford the fastest runner in the 2010 Major League Draft. Darian showed that projection to be true as he led the Arizona Rookie League during the 2010 season in stolen bases, swiping 30 in 38 games while hitting .279 with a .364 OBP. In 2010, Sandford was the #2 base stealer in the Pioneer League with 27 steals and a .246 batting average.
Darian played his college baseball at Park University where in two seasons he hit .375 with a .425 on base percentage. He set a school record for stolen bases in a season with 56 and career stolen bases with 99 during his two seasons at Park University.
Miners manager Mike Pinto commented on Sandford, "Darian has game changing speed. According to the reports I received from the Royals organization as well as Major League scouts, he has the skills to positively impact an offense. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do in our offense".
