Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - On Tuesday, May 4, the Southern Illinois Miners will celebrate Marion Junior High School, this year's top participating school in the Miners Reading Program.
During the ceremony, which will be held at Marion Junior High, the top four readers from the school will plant a tree donated by Changing Seasons Landscaping and Nursery and JULIE, Inc. to replace trees lost in the storm last spring. The Miners mascots will also be on hand for the celebration. The tree-planting is scheduled to take place at approximately 2 p.m.
The Miners reading program, sponsored by JULIE, Inc. is in its fourth year and saw over 20,000 students from the Southern Illinois region participate during this school year. In conjunction with the program, each school set individual reading goals for its students. Students who reached their reading goals were given a bookmark, which can be redeemed for a free Miners ticket to one of six select games during the 2010 season.
"We are very excited about JULIE, Inc. helping us expand our Reading Program to involve over 20,000 kids across the region," Miners Client Services Manager Sarah Chamness said. "On behalf of the Miners and JULIE, Inc., I'd also like to thank Changing Seasons Landscaping and Nursery for giving us the opportunity to give something back to the environment in the name of the Miners Reading Program."
Over 950 students participated from Marion Junior High. Since the inception of the Miners Reading Program, circulation at the school's library has more than doubled in the past five years, to almost 19,000 check outs per year. That is an average of about 21 books checked out per student enrolled.
"It's great to be able to give something back to one of the many schools whose students worked hard this year," Chamness said. "In the future we plan to give something back to many more schools."
The Miners open the season on May 20 with a 7:05 p.m. home game against River City. For a complete schedule and the latest news on the Miners and events at Rent One Park, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
