Miners fall to Outlaws, 5-2

MESA, ARIZONA –The Mesa Miners fell to the Chico Outlaws 5-2 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.

The Outlaws scored two runs in the first inning off Miners starter Julian Harris (0-1) with Jason Van Meetren's 2-run home run. Steve Newson added another 2-run home run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. The Miners would score two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Caleb Maher and an RBI groundout by Michael Done.

That was all the run support Chico starter Grant Gregg (1-1) would need, as he pitched 7.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits. Closer Mike Gits pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. Mesa starter Harris pitched five innings giving up two runs on four hits.

Game two of the three game series is tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at HoHoKam Park. The scheduled starter for Mesa is Jason Navrro (0-2) and for Chico TBA.
