
Miners end losing streak, win 5-2

MESA, ARIZONA âThe Mesa Miners ended their four game losing streak by beating the Long Beach Armada 5-2 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
The Miners didn't allow the opponent to score in the first inning, which had happened in the previous five games. Instead, the Miners got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a solo home run by Caleb Maher (3) and a RBI triple by Marcus Jensen to give them a 2-0 lead.
The Armada tied the game at two by scoring a run in the fourth inning and a run in the fifth inning. Both runs were charged to starter Chris Marini (0-0) who pitched seven strong innings giving up two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Long Beach starter Mike Marchesano (1-0) received a no decision by giving up two runs on five hits in six innings of work.
Cleatus Davidson led off the eighth inning with a triple and eventually scored on a RBI groundout by Adam Bonner to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. Mesa added some insurance runs with a RBI double by Michael Done and a RBI ground rule double by Kevin Reinking.
Reliever Jon Uhl (1-0) picked up the win in relief and Kelly Johnson got his first and the team's first save of the season. Armada reliever Alan Newman (0-1) got the loss for Long Beach.
The Miners have a scheduled day off tomorrow before the Japan Samurai Bears come into town for a three game series on Friday at 6:35 p.m. at HoHoKam Park.
