
Miners dominate, defeat Silverados

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Playing in front of a hoops hungry home crowd, East Kentucky snapped a two-game losing streak Wednesday night, defeating visiting Rio Grande Valley 114-90. East Kentucky moved back to the .500 mark after posting the win. The Miners improved to 13-13 thanks to the victory over the Texas franchise.
East Kentucky raced past the Silverados on many offensive trips.
Boo Jackson led East Kentucky with a double-double effort of 24 points and 13 rebounds. The CBA's leader in double-doubles, Jackson dished off three assists, blocked two shots and recorded a pair of steals.
Jason McLeish and Josh Pace each had 18 points for the Miners. Pace handed out six assists for the East Kentucky professional basketball team.
"We ran all night and then ran a little longer," said East Kentucky Coach Kevin Keathley. "Rio Grande Valley is a much-improved basketball team. Our guys came in ready to play tonight - and played with enthusiasm. It was key for us to get this home win before we go on a break, then return here at the Expo Center for a game against conference rival Pittsburgh."
Reo Logan tossed in 12 points and Bryant Northern netted 11 as East Kentucky returned to the win column. Northern hit 3-of-4 three-point field goal attempts.
The Miners outscored Rio Grande Valley 31-19 in the opening quarter. East Kentucky maintained control in the second quarter on its way to a 63-42 halftime lead.
East Kentucky dominated, winning each of the first three quarters. The two teams totaled the same number of points in the final quarter. East Kentucky won the quarter points convincingly, 6.5-0.5.
The Miners shot 56-percent from the field.
Rod Nealy led Rio Grande Valley with 21 points. Najeeb Echols netted 14 points and Renaldo Norman followed with 11 for the Silverados. Demorris Smith and Nate Johnson each had 10 points for the visiting team.
Rio Grande Valley fell to 3-20 as a result of the non-conference setback.
East Kentucky is off until Monday when American Conference foe Pittsburgh visits for a key contest. Tip-off for the upcoming East Kentucky-Pittsburgh game is set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for East Kentucky's latest home conference game versus Pittsburgh remain available.
