Mesa Miners News Release

MESA, ARIZONA -The Mesa Miners (24-13) had a lot to celebrate on Independence Day. Not only did their 6-3 victory of the Yuma Scorpions (20-16) increase their division lead to a season high 3.5 games, they also turned the Golden Baseball League's first triple play.

The triple play occurred in the top of the fifth inning when the Scorpions loaded the bases off of Mesa starter Manny Ayala. Jason Dewey hit a deep fly ball to right center that was caught by Adam Bonner on the run. Bonner made a perfect throw to second base to Cleatus Davidson who tagged the base for the second out. Davidson then threw the ball to third base where Michael Done completed the triple play.

Dewey earlier hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Scorpions a 1-0 lead. The Miners came right back in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1 when they scored a run on no hits. Done was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Davidson. The Miners scored three more runs in the second with a 2-run double by Paul Powell and am RBI single by Caleb Maher. Maher later added a 2-run home run in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-2. Maher continues to lead the GBL in home runs with 8.

20-year old Ayala (6-2) earned the win by giving up two runs on nine hits in eight innings. Starting pitcher for Yuma, Dane DeLaRosa (1-1), took the loss.

The Miners will continue their four game series against the Scorpions tomorrow at 6:35 pm at HoHoKam Park. The scheduled starters are Jon Uhl (3-10) for Mesa and Rusty Meacham (2-2) for Yuma.
