Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners were out-scored 7-1 to the Florence Freedom on Thursday night at UC Health Stadium to conclude their seven-game road trip at 3-4, falling to 32-16 with the defeat.
The Miners scored a run in the first when they loaded the bases with no one out against Florence starter Cody Gray (2-1), with a double-play grounder by Alex De Leon brought home Aaron Gates and made it 1-0 Miners. But they would get no more runs in the contest, as Gray pitched seven innings, scattering seven hits and two walks in getting the win for Florence.
Rick Teasley (4-3) was up to the task as well through the first four innings, stranding two runners on base in the first and second innings. In the fifth, the Freedom would push across the tying run when Travis Weaver doubled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 1-1. In the next inning, a two-out rally gave the Freedom the lead when Josh Henderson reached on a two-out infield single and scored when Garrett Vail doubled on the next pitch to make the score 2-1. In the seventh, Teasley would depart after Florence loaded the bases, with all three runners ending up scoring for a 5-1 margin. Two more runs in the eighth against Evan Mott accounted for the final margin.
Vin Guglietti finished 2-for-4 with a double and newest Miner Edison Sanchez went 2-for-3 in his Southern Illinois debut but it was not enough as they split the four-game series on the road. The Miners will head back home for their last series before the all-star break, against the River City Rascals beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Dan Ludwig will pitch for the Miners against River City right-hander Tim Koons.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
