MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have traded right-handed pitcher Cardoza Tucker to the Orange County Flyers of the Golden League in exchange for outfielder Travon Jackson.

In 2008 Jackson hit .352 as a rookie for the Flyers, who won the Golden League Championship. His average would have placed him in the top 10 in the league, but he was 10 at-bats shy of qualifying.

Jackson played his senior year of college at Division II New Mexico Highlands where he led the team in hitting (.444) and set a new school record with 111 hits. He also had 27 doubles, five triples, four home runs and an on-base percentage of .496. Jackson also led the team with 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He was an American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-West Region first team outfielder. In his 250 at bats he struck out only 15 times.

"Travon has showed great ability at the plate," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "He has a great feel for the strike zone and uses the whole field as a hitter. He can hit, bunt and run and has a very strong arm to go along with excellent defensive skills. Travon is another table setter to go along with our middle guys. I am looking forward to seeing him this spring."

The Miners acquired Tucker on Jan. 6 as the player to be named later in the trade that sent left-handed pitcher Reid Price to the Ottawa Rapidz of the Can-Am League on July 9, 2008.

"Tuck was hoping to be able to play closer to home this season," Pinto said, "and this trade with Orange County allows him to do that and gets us a quality every day impact player so it's a great arrangement for all concerned."

This is the second trade the Miners have made with Orange County this offseason. Last week the Miners sent reliever Armando Carrasco to Orange County in exchange for shortstop/centerfielder Gered Mochizuki.

The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For a complete schedule visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
