Saint John Riptide News Release
Montreal, Canada - December 14, 2007 - The #1 ranked team in the ABA, the Manchester Millrats, trumped the Montreal Royal 106-97 on the road. The win is Manchester's 10th straight victory and improves their record to a League best 12-1.
Montreal fought hard for the home crowd throughout, and had claimed a 48-42 lead with 3:07 to go in the second quarter, but Manchester closed on a 9-0 run that gave them a 51-48 halftime lead.
Millrats forward PJ Young ignited a third quarter run with yeoman's work on the offensive glass, and his short jumper put Manchester ahead 66-56 with 4:21 to go in the third.
Montreal again rallied late in the fourth, knotting the game up at 86-86 on five straight free throws. But Anthony Anderson took over for stretch that dealt the Royal their final blow. "AA" blocked a shot from behind and cruised in for an uncontested layup and a 97-90 lead. On the following possession, he stole the ball and dished to John Huggins for a layup plus the foul and an insurmountable 100-90 lead with under two minutes to play.
The Millrats diminutive starting backcourt of 6'0 Ismael Caro and 5'11 Anthony Anderson proved the difference as the two point guards combined for 50 points (Caro 27, Anderson 23). Caro controlled the action throughout and led with a team high 8 assists. Souleymane Wane added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while John Huggins notched 14 off the bench.
The Millrats defense held the Royal to just 35% from the floor for the game.
On Monday night at 7:00 pm the Millrats visit Burlington, VT to face the defending ABA Champion Vermont Frost Heaves for the third time this season. This game has been rescheduled to Monday due to Sunday's predicted snowstorm.
The next home game for Manchester is Friday December 21st at 7:05 pm as the Millrats play the Quebec Kebs, the only team to beat them this season. All Manchester Millrats games are 'events'. Each game is headlined by a host of entertainment and family fun including exciting basketball, music, live singer(s), our mascot - Milly the Millrat, the Pink Sapphire Dancers, fun contests, a halftime show, and the Spindel Eye Associates $10,000 Hot Shot Challenge!
