Saint John Riptide News Release
The Manchester Millrats of the American Basketball Association (ABA) downed the Halifax Rainmen 121-112 at the Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The victory was the third straight win by the Millrats over the Rainmen. The Millrats swept the back to back games in Halifax.
Manchester built an early 27-17 lead before the Rainmen rallied with an 8-0 run to get within 27-25. The teams traded baskets towards the end of the first quarter with the Millrats gaining a 30-29 edge after one.
In the second quarter, Halifax's Eric Crookshank began having his way inside and bulling his way for 20 first half points. Rob Sanders threw down a huge one handed slam over the Rainmen defense, keying a Millrats run which made the score 52-42, Manchester. Then the Millrats' bench responded from the perimeter. Guard Rashid Al-Kaleem nailed 5 three pointers in the second quarter. And then forward Stacey Moragne picked up where Al-Kaleem left off, hitting 3 of 3 from outside the arc to help Manchester extend to 63-45 halftime lead.
Manchester entered the fourth quarter leading 95-74 but the Rainmen would refused go away. Three point shooting by Brian Silverhorn and Devino Williams help rally the home team to within 96-84 with 8:28 left in the game. The crowd of approximately 2,300 came to life and began to make their presence felt. Millrats Head Coach Larry Lessett opted to go with a three guard offense of Ismael Caro, Anthony Anderson, and John Huggins to counter the Halifax pressure. A big block by Kadri Richard on Souleymane Wane led to a three point attempt and the Rainmen got within 117-112 with 32 seconds left. Two free throws and a one handed slam by Wane at the end made up the final score.
Manchester was led by Ismael Caro with 22 points, Rashid Al-Kaleem with 18, and John Huggins 17. The leading scorer for Halifax was Eric Crookshank with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Manchester improves to 4-1 on the season, while Halifax drops to 1-4.
"I'm very proud of how our guys stayed mentally tough on the road," stated Millrats Coach Lessett, "it's not easy to win the second game of a back to back series on the road and we stayed focused."
The Millrats depart Halifax tonight bound for Manchester. On Sunday at 4:35 pm, the Millrats face the Montreal Royal in the 'Fieldhouse' on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University.
