SAINT JOHN, N.B. - The Saint John Mill Rats took down the #1 ranked Halifax Hurricanes for the 6th time this year, 110-103, in a 2 PM matinee game at Harbour Station.
"We are facing a very good, well coached opponent," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "Our focus was there, guys were dialed in, and they came through again in crunch time. We also took great care of the ball and moved it well."
Saint John began the game honouring former Saint John High Greyhound, Mike Anderson, who heads off on Monday to the Canadian Armed Forces. Coach Spon elected to give Mike his first start of his career tonight, and he responded nailing a jumper in the opening minutes of the game. After a standing ovation from the crowd he exited the game, and yielded the centre spot to customary starter, Anthony Stover. The Mill Rats led 27-21 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Halifax bench behind Justin Johnson and Mike Glover began doing damage, and they outscored the Mill Rats 27-21 to tie it at 48-48 at the half.
In the third quarter the Mill Rats and Hurricanes were tied 71-71 when Doug Herring Jr drove to the basket, got the foul, and the Hurricanes were called for a technical foul. The two point and two free throws gave Saint John a 75-71 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Anderson had it going from long range, draining 5 of 7 triples including a four-pointer with a foul. Herring Jr slashing forays to the hoop, and Freeman's activity and energy also to basket proved to be the difference on offense. Johnny Mayhane and Ricky Volcy also drilled key three pointers in the final few minutes to break open a nip and tuck game. On defense, Anthony Stover's 7 blocks helped patrol the interior.
Saint John improves their record to 21-12 on the season while Halifax drops to 22-9. The two teams will tango again tomorrow in Halifax at 2 PM.
Doug Herring Jr led Saint John with 26 points, 8 assist and 0 turnovers. Anthony Anderson and Gabe Freeman had 24 each. Ricky Volcy and Johnny Mayhane scored 11 a piece.
The Mill Rats are back in Harbour Station next Saturday night at 7PM to face the Island Storm.
