NBL Canada Saint John Riptide

Mill Rats Re-Tool, Add Firepower

December 16, 2014 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Saint John Riptide News Release

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats have retooled their lineup in just a few days after releasing four players on Saturday, adding firepower to the core roster. The players that were released were Aquille Carr, Jamine Peterson, Naofall Folahan, and Anthony Winbush. The releases came on the heels of back to back losses against Halifax and Moncton.

The new additions are 5'11 point guard Raheem "Radio" Singleton, 6'7 forward Jeremy Williams, 6'5 wing Johnny Mayhane, and 6'11 Canadian centre Jamie Vanderbeken.

"Radio" played for Saint John and averaged 11 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

Jeremy Williams played his college ball at the University of Texas-El Paso, but played for the London Lightning and the Island Storm in the NBL Canada the last two seasons. With the Lightning Williams won an NBL Canada title, and with the Storm he reached Game 7 of the Finals last year. A rugged combo forward he averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds while also shooting over 40% from beyond the arc.

Johnny Mayhane is a 6'5 wing who was an NBL Canada All Star last season with the Moncton Miracles. Mayhane was the fourth leading scorer in the NBL Canada last season, averaging 20.1 points per game and 36% from behind the arc.

Jamie Vanderbeken played for the Ottawa SkyHawks of the NBL Canada last season and finished as the #1 three point shooter in the league at 47.6% from behind the arc. He played his college basketball at Iowa State and played a season in the NBA Development League with the Bakersfield Jam.

"We went to work immediately after the roster changes to find players who would fit in with our established veterans, and who had skill sets that we needed to make us a more complete basketball team," said Mill Rats President and General Manager Ian McCarthy. "One thing in common is all of these guys can fill it up from the outside, but they are also character guys who are great in the community and buy into a team defensive scheme."

The additions are all cleared already by FIBA to play since their last basketball jobs were in the NBL Canada. Williams, Mayhane, and Singleton are expected to be in uniform Saturday December 20th when the Mill Rats host the Halifax Rainmen. Vanderbeken arrives late December.

The Mill Rats next game is Thursday night at 7pm at Harbour Station in a rematch against the Halifax Rainmen! Get your tickets at www.harbourstation.ca
