Saint John Riptide News Release
(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats rallied to take down #1 ranked Island Storm, 111-106, at Harbour Station. Saint John has now won 7 of their last 8 games.
The Mill Rats had lost 4 straight to the Storm including the last three games which went down to the wire. Tonight the team wanted to send a message to the team with the best record in the NBL Canada.
The game started being played extremely closing as the Storm won the first quarter 23-22 as Ricky Volcy's three pointer missed at the buzzer. In the second quarter, the visitors from Prince Edward Island built a 46-38 lead with 1 minute to go, but a three pointer by Alex Johnson and Anthony Anderson scored to cut the deficit to 46-43 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Mill Rats held a 71-70 lead when Eric Crookshank's tip slam dunk was good with 10 seconds left, increasing the lead to 73-70. But Rashad Whack then drained a three pointer from the corner to tie the game 73-all heading into the fourth.
In the final stanza, the Storm went on a 13-4 run to take a commanding 86-77 lead with 7 minutes left in the game. Kenny Jones scored a drive to make it 86-79. Keith Cothran scored a reverse layup, on the next play he slipped a pass to Kenny Jones for another lay in, and then Cothran made a steal and cruised in to the basket and suddenly the score was 85-86.
With the Mill Rats leading 97-93 with 3:11 left, Tyrone Levett hit a huge three pointer to extend to 100-93. Cothran hit a swooping finger roll for 102, and the Storm could not close the gap.
"This was a great win for our team, to have Double A (Anthony Anderson) back in the lineup was great, and to get great support off the bench," said Mill Rats Head Coach Julian King. "We are still learning to play as a unit, but its great to see guys supporting one another when things don't always go right."
Anthony Anderson led the Mill Rats with 16 points, Kenny Jones and Alex Johnson had 15, Keith Cothran 14 to go with 6 steals, Johnny Mayhane 11, and Ricky Volcy 10. Nick Okorie led the Storm with 21.
Saint John improves to 14-14 while the Island Storm drop to 19-9.
The Mill Rats next game is February 19th at Harbour Station against the Mississauga Power. They visit the Moncton Miracles on Monday.
