Mill Rats News & Notes

December 14, 2013 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Saint John Riptide News Release

The Saint John Mill Rats are currently in first place in the Atlantic Division, and are off to their best start in history, with a 9-5 record.

"This is the best team we've had ever and the players are focused on one goal: an NBL Canada Championship," said Mill Rats President & General Manager Ian McCarthy. "This is going to be a memorable season, and we'd love to have all of our fans from the beginning on board with us as we go on this incredible ride!"

Anthony Anderson leads the attack with 23.3 points per game (2nd in the league), Tyrone Levett is 10th in the NBLC with 16.5 points per game, and Doug Herring Jr adds 15.7. Herring Jr. was named NBLC Player of the Week in mid-November. Herring is also #1 in the league in 3-point shooting percentage.

"They say this town loves a winner, well they got one, and so we just need our great fans to make sure they come out to support this team each and every night," explained Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "We can't do it alone we need our "6th man" - the crowd - to make Harbour Station a truly hostile environment to the visiting teams."

The Mill Rats are 4-0 this season against Moncton (winning Thursday night 118-113 on the road), and 3-0 against Halifax.

Sunday's Game Postponed

The game this Sunday at Harbour Station against the Moncton Miracles has been postponed due to an impending snow storm. The game has been rescheduled for Feb 26 at 7PM. Tickets issued for December 15th will be accepted for the February 26th.

Saturday Night's Game vs. the Windsor Express at 7PM is ON!

Former Maine Black Bear Added to Roster

5'10 point guard, Raheem Singleton (aka "Radio"), has been added to the Mill Rats roster. Singleton played for the nearby University of Maine Black Bears from 2010-2012. He averaged highs of 8.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game at Maine.

He made the initial roster of the Maine Red Claws NBA Development League team in 2012 but was released. This summer the London Lightning made Singleton their first round draft pick (#9 overall). After starting 10 games for the Lightning he was granted his release, and the Mill Rats immediately signed him.

Singleton is from Boston, Massachusetts and looked up to the Mill Rats Anthony Anderson and Will Blalock.

"Radio is the perfect guy to help us manage Anderson's minutes, and he can hold it down as an achor on the second unit," said Coach Spon. "He is a pitbull defensively and plays extremely hard all the time."

Singleton is the second player added by the Mill Rats this week. 6'7 shot blocker Damian Eargle, from Youngstown, Ohio, was added this week and received his FIBA clearance on Friday.

Single game, season & flex tickets are still on sale at the at the Harbour Station Box Office by calling 506-657-1234.
