Saint John Riptide News Release
(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats introduced the Community Investor Group at a press conference at Harbour Station today.
Mill Rats President & General Manager Ian McCarthy announced that Saint Johners Mike Tilley and Jeff White have been added to the Mill Rats Board of Directors, and introduced Paul Vaughan as the official spokesman for the group. Vaughan also serves as a long time Mill Rats Assistant Coach and Head Coach at K.V. High School.
The group is evolving and has plans to include up to 40 local business and basketball people within a year. Anyone with interest in joining the group can send an email to hoops@millratsbasketball.ca and someone from the group will follow up with information.
Paul explained how he and others originally decided to get involved with the group and the importance of having the Mill Rats and the NBL Canada in Saint John.
"Canada was the only team in the FIBA Top 40 that did not have its own domestic pro league," Vaughan said. "The NBL Canada is now our own domestic league. There are Canadian players, Canadian owners, Canadian fans, Canadian coaches, Canadian dance teams as well as employees, arena staff, and more. All those opportunities would not exist without this league and the Mill Rats."
The vision of the group is to entrench the Mill Rats moreso in the community and build a strong local base of support to anchor the team in Saint John indefinitely.
Paul concluded by imploring the community to support the Mill Rats: "Consider a sponsorship, even a modest one, or even the title sponsorship, or go out and purchase tickets because those funds stay here in Saint John and help continue this program for generations to come."
The Mill Rats are currently 2-1 and in first place of the Atlantic Division after a thrilling win against the Island Storm Sunday in their home opener. They are on the road in Halifax this Sunday Nov 16th, then Mississauga and Brampton next week, before coming home to play the Island Storm in a rematch at Harbour Station on November 23rd.
