Saint John Riptide News Release
The Saint John Mill Rats made their preseason home debut at Harbour Station by beating the Moncton Miracles 108-104 in the franchise's first ever school day game.
Two thousand plus fans, mostly kids bused in from surrounding schools, saw the new-look Mill Rats in action.
The Mill Rats used strong bench play to surge ahead 59-55 at the half.
In the second half the game became a seesaw battle, but Saint John opened up an 11 point lead late in the fourth and withstood some late baskets by the Miracles which made the ending interesting. Anthony Winbush made 1 of 2 free throws with 7 seconds left to seal the game.
"I thought considering the 5 hour training camp practices we've been having and the late road game last night with a quick turnaround for a morning game, the guys played with great energy," said Mill Rats Head Coach Julian King. "I could see tired legs but they still fought every possession so I'm happy about that."
The Mill Rats featured strong interior play, and a strong bench, both of which were their Achilles heal last season. Draft picks Winbush (3rd round), Jabs Newby (1st round), and JP Nyadaro (2nd round) scored 19, 16, and 12 points respectively, off the bench. Kenny Jones scored 14 points in just over ten minutes of playing time.
Aquille Carr, the YouTube sensation, sat most of the first half but notched 13 points overall in his first game at Harbour Station. Trayvon Lathan scored 25 points for the Miracles.
