(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats are thrilled to announce the addition of 6'3 guard Doug Herring Jr from Poughkeepsie, New York - pending FIBA clearance.
Herring was discovered by Mill Rats GM Ian McCarthy and co-owner Steven Yankopoulos on a happenstance recruiting trip to the Greater Hartford Pro-Am in Waterbury, Connecticut this summer.
"I was on my way to Boston for a different tournament that was canceled due to rain, so I decided to make the best of it and take a ride through the Greater Hartford Pro Am. The GHPA is one of the best pro-am circuits in the country. On the last game of the day, we witnessed a 53-point performance by Doug Herring Jr. that really turned our heads," explained McCarthy. "He was unstoppable against double teams and the announcer kept calling him 'baby Paul Pierce'."
Herring has been playing on the Hudson Valley Kingz, a semi-pro team in the Atlantic Professional Basketball League (APBL). He has been torching the league for two seasons averaging over 31 points per game. One game last season he went for 66 points.
"Doug is an undiscovered talent who has the rare combination of being a devastating scorer but he also makes the right basketball plays - he is not a selfish player by any stretch," added McCarthy.
Herring played his college ball at Utica College in upstate New York from 2005-2009. At Utica he posted career highs of 18.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He was a nominee for the Bob Cousy Award in 2008. Herring is the second player signing announced this season for the Mill Rats. Here is the roster breakdown to date:
