Saint John Riptide News Release
(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats have acquired NBL Canada All Star Canadian point guard, Alex "Superman" Johnson via a trade with the Mississauga Power.
Johnson was celebrated as the first Canadian player to be selected #1 overall i in the NBL Canada Draft in 2013 by the expansion Ottawa SkyHawks. He was later dealt to the Mississauga Power where he was named a 2013-14 All Star and awarded 1st Team All Canadian honours.
His nickname "Superman" was bestowed due to his incredible vertical leap despite being just 5'10.
Johnson played college basketball in the rugged ACC conference for powerhouse NC State. He played one season in Romania before joining the NBLC.
He's averaged 10 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game for the Power in 13 contests.
To acquire Johnson the Mill Rats agreed to ship rookie guard Jabs Newby to the Power. Newby, the #2 overall pick in this year's draft, has averaged 8.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.
"We were reluctant to part ways with Jabs who clearly has a bright future in basketball ahead of him," said Mill Rats President & General Manager Ian McCarthy. "However the opportunity to acquire an All Star calibre player like Alex, and someone who is a bit more experienced, was too much to pass up with our operation to rebuild the team in mid season."
"We wish Jabs nothing but the best in his future endeavors and expect him to have success with the Power, which is close to home for him as well."
The Mill Rats next home game is Thursday January 1st at 7pm at Harbour Station in a rematch against the Moncton Miracles! Get your tickets at www.harbourstation.ca or call 657-1234.
