CHICAGO - Midge Purce of Portland Thorns FC has been voted NWSL Player of the Week for Week 19 of the 2019 season by the NWSL Media Association. This is the first time in her career that Purce has been selected as Player of the Week.
During Thorns FC's 3-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars, Purce scored the second and third goals of the contest.
After Christine Sinclair opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Purce tacked on the team's second of the game 12 minutes later. Hayley Raso's cross came off the hands of Chicago goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Purce nodded the ball home from close range. She once again pounced on a loose ball in the box when she finished off the rebound after a Sinclair shot came off the crossbar in the 56th minute.
Purce now has eight goals on the season as Portland increased its lead at the top of the standings to five points over second-place North Carolina Courage. Portland Thorns FC has now won three games in a row.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
