Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League are proud to announce that Mickael Bedard has been named the 2009-10 IHL Rookie of the Year, as selected by league head coaches, general managers and members of the media.
The 22-year-old native of Montreal is in his second professional season, but played just 22 games for St. Georges CRS Express of the LNAH last year, allowing him to qualify as a rookie under IHL rules. Bedard has 73 points (35 goals, 38 assists) in 74 games thus far this season, and has appeared in every Icehawks game during the regular season. His 73 points lead the Icehawks, and put him within eight points of the team's single season record with two games to play.
Bedard earned his first IHL point on an assist in just his third game with the Icehawks on October 24. His first goal followed a week later on Halloween. In November, the rookie went on a team-high nine-game point streak, tallying five goals and seven assists.
The left-winger had 20 multi-point games this season, including a pair of hat tricks in a single calendar week. His January 2 hat trick included three power play goals, a league single-game high. Bedard has notched in five game-winning goals this season and is tied for the overall league lead with a plus-34 rating. He currently leads all IHL rookies in points (73), goals (35), assists (38), power play goals (11) and plus/minus rating (+34).
Previous winners of the IHL Rookie of the Year Award include Luciano Aquino, who won in the 2007-08 season with the Fort Wayne Komets, and last season's winner Rick Cleaver of the Kalamazoo Wings, who now play in the ECHL.
Bedard was honored by the IHL eight times this season, including two Rookie of the Month Awards. He will be presented with his award during the Icehawks' regular season finale against Bloomington Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. at McMorran Arena.
Single game tickets for all Icehawks home games are on sale now at the McMorran Arena Box Office, any Ticket Master location or by phone. Season tickets for 2010-11 and 2010 Turner Cup Playoffs tickets are also available now. For more information, call 810-966-3800.
