Mid Michigan Ice News Release
A night after a strong pitching performance and late-inning batting heroics, the Michigan Ice repeated both feats in a 5-4 victory over the Toyota Shokki, a pro fastpitch team from Japan.
Leading the way in the circle was Jenny Mackson who won her second contest of the season. Mackson went 6 1/3 giving up only two earned runs and 7 hits. Erin Brockert earned her first professional save as she got the final two outs in the 7th.
The Ice, trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth unloaded a five-run inning to aid Mackson. Nikki Conway started off with a double and advanced to third on a single from Grete Hornstrom. First baseman, Kim Biskup earned an RBI with a hard shot while Alison Honaman singled around Hornstrom. Becky Manson continued her hot batting with an RBI single in the fourth to end a five-run, six hit inning. Manson ended her day with two hits and a stolen base.
The Ice are now heading to Columbus (IN) to face the same Shokki team on Wednesday. The Japanese pro team are on a tour of various Toyota plants in the Midwest. In Columbus, the Shokki will be aided by the return of teammate Michele Smith, a US Gold Medal winner who is also the teams leading pitcher.
