Michael Born Named Flight Assistant Coach

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., SEPTEMBER 6, 2001 â The National Basketball Development League and the Huntsville Flight have named Michael Born the team's assistant coach, it was announced today by Karl Hicks, Executive Director for the NBDL and Ralph Lewis, head coach of the Flight.
"Michael is a highly qualified coach with experience in minor league basketball," said Lewis. "He has been both a head coach and an assistant coach and he knows the top talent at this level. He is looking to grow and get to the next level and I know he will be a great addition to the organization."
Born, 36, spent the past season as an associate coach for the Kansas City Knights of the ABA. Born joined the Knights after leading the Des Moines Dragons (IBA) to a 34-15 record and a spot in the IBA Championship Game as the team's head coach/director of player personnel.
"This is a great opportunity for me and my family," said Born. "I'm excited to be part of the NBDL, the Tennessee Valley community and to work with Ralph in developing players that are hungry to get to the next level."
Born's coaching experience also includes serving as the camp director for Michael Born Basketball Camps for the past 12 years. During that time, Born has also served as the director for several NBA players' basketball camps, including Houston Rockets' guard Steve Francis.
A Des Moines, Iowa native, Born was a standout guard at Iowa State from 1986-89 where he earned a B.A. in Art and Design. Upon graduation, Born played professionally in Germany and France.
Born will assume his assistant coaching duties immediately. In addition to his basketball duties, Born will contribute to the team's community relations' initiatives. Among his credentials, Born has performed a public speaking role in many elementary and secondary schools, speaking on such topics as goal setting, motivation, DARE, and the importance of staying in school.
