July 12, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release

Miami, July 12, 2009 - The Blues returned to their winning ways beating the USL-1 Champions, the Vancouver Whitecaps Sunday night. Miami, boasting an undefeated record at FIU stadium, propelled themselves in the USL standings improving their home record to 4-3-1. Miami will continue their home-standing facing the Portland Timbers on Friday, July 17 and Sunday July 19 at FIU Stadium.

Miami controlled the first half creating plenty of offensive opportunities. After five minutes, Alen Marcina buried the first Miami goal after a great build up play from the midfield. Leo Inacio deflected a beautiful through ball off his chest for an Alen Marcina strike.

In the 23 minute, an untimely handball led to a Miami FC penalty kick. Leo Inacio kicked the ball casually to give the Blues a 2-0 lead.

Three minutes later, the Whitecaps had a one on one opportunity. Lyle Martin broke through the Miami defense and was left alone with Miami goalkeeper, Kenny Schoeni. He tried to place the ball to the right but the ball would sail out of bounds.

"We played better than Vancouver in every aspect of the game," said head coach, Zinho. "The players are stepping up to the challenge, they are really coming together."

The second half featured a more offensive initiative from the Vancouver Whitecaps. In the 56 minute, Burgess unleashed a free kick that sailed just wide of the Miami post.

Seven minutes later, Miami was left with only ten players. Alen Marcina tried to cross a ball on a Miami counter attack. It seemed the ball bounced off a Vancouver player, but the referee issued a goal kick. Marcina and the referee exchanged words, afterward he was issued a direct red card.

Vancouver took advantage of the numerical superiority and attacked for the rest of the second half. In the 88 minute, Martin Nash began a string of passes that brought the only goal for the Whitecaps. Nash placed a beautiful through ball to Lyle Martin; Martin then positioned a ball for Dever Orgill, who pushed the ball to the back of the net.

With tonight's win, Miami FC jumped to six place and is only four points behind the Rhinos, but Rochester has played one more game.

The Blues will now play to consecutive games against the second place Timbers on Friday 8PM and Sunday 6PM at FIU Stadium.
