Miami, Sept 22, 2010 - Abe Thompson helped lift Miami FC to a 4-2 victory over AC St. Louis with an impressive three-goal performance and giving the Blues its third consecutive victory. The Blues return to action this weekend against the Rochester Rhinos at Fort Lauderdale Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
"Winning builds confidence and when you get a couple wins under your belt you feel pretty good," Miami FC Head Coach Daryl Shore said. "This was a great result and I am proud of our guys for putting together a good performance. We're playing good soccer right now."
The Blues applied pm proud of our guys for pressure up front early on and had an opportunity when Paulinho Le Petit delivered a beautiful through ball to Brian Shriver inside the box. Shriver then crossed it over to the right side, but Abe Thompson was out of position and unable to get a clear shot on goal in the 4th minute of the match.
The Blues appeared to take the lead in the 14th minute when Le Petit delivered a picture-perfect free kick into the box for Aaron Hohlbein, who headed the ball into the back of the net for the goal. But the referee disallowed it after a penalty was called inside the box to the dismay of Hohlbein.
A dangerous moment appeared when Brad Stisser received a through ball that made its way through the Blues defense and left him one-on-one with Miami FC goalkeeper Matt Glaeser. Glaeser got a hand on the shot by Stisser and the ball dribbled its way off the far post and knocked harmlessly away by the backline.
Jarryd Goldberg connected with Danilo Martins in the 25th minute after Le Petit played a corner kick short to Goldberg. The Miami FC midfielder went deep into the box before crossing the ball back to Danilo, who headed the ball on goal, forcing St. Louis keeper Alec Dufty to make a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
Miami FC caught a break inside the box in the 43rd minute when a cross by Le Petit bounced off an AC St. Louis defender attempting to kill the play, but instead the ball took a bounce towards the box and at the feet of Abe Thompson. The forward then delivered a turnaround shot that made its way past Dufty to give the Blues a 1-0 lead shortly before the end of the half.
With a one-goal advantage heading into the second half, the Blues remained on the offensive early in the second stanza and it paid off as Gerson Mayen delivered the first shot on goal and then Danilo followed with a bicycle kick effort. But it was Thompson who knocked in his second goal of the game in the 56th minute to give Miami FC an insurance goal.
Minutes later Thompson struck again, picking up the rebound after Dufty couldn't corral a cross from Euzebio Neto and knocking it easily into the back of the net to pick up the hat trick.
AC St. Louis, with its playoff hopes hanging by a thread, did not back down and went on the offensive. They struck back in the 68th minute when Stisser executed a sliding shot after a cross from Luke Kreamalmeyer while Gleaser was out of position.
It didn't take long for the Blues to respond, as Le Petit launched a curving a shot from 20 yards that swerved its way out of the reach of a diving Dufty after outmaneuvering former
Miami FC midfielder Jack Traynor just outside the box.
The Blues continued their relentlessness around the net, but Stisser picked up his second goal of the game in the 83rd minute for St. Louis to cut the lead in half with just minutes remaining.
But it was too little too late as the Blues staved off whatever comeback attempt St. Louis tried to muster in the final moments.
