Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Kingsport Mets (3-8) stunned the Greeneville Astros (4-7) as they evened the series Sunday night at one game apiece. The Astros will look to bounce back Monday in front of a packed house on the Fourth of July.
Starting pitcher Carlos Hiraldo struggled out of the gates as the Mets pounced early in the first inning. A walk and a wild pitch to start the contest set the Mets up with a runner in scoring position with no outs. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, a home run to left center field gave the Mets an early 2-0 lead. Back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly tacked on another run before a walk and a double left the Astros down 5-0. The second inning featured three more runs by the Mets after back-to-back errors and a three-run home run.
The Astros offense was highlighted by left fielder Spencer Johnson and designated hitter Wander Franco. Both players notched two hits on the night with Franco registering a double in the bottom of the sixth, putting Johnson and Franco in scoring position with one out. A pop up to the first baseman and a strikeout kept the Astros from scoring.
Newcomer Reggie Johnson made his team debut for Greeneville as he pitched two innings and tallied two strikeouts. Fellow Astros reliever Carlos Sanabria entered with two outs in the third and totaled five and one-third innings pitched while striking out six.
Kingsport added three more insurance runs between the top of the sixth and eighth innings. Both innings saw singles followed by a triple leading to the eventual final score of 11-0.
Greeneville sends starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval (1-0) to the mound tomorrow as they try to take the series before leaving on a one-game road trip to Kingsport. First pitch is set for 4:00pm as fans can catch the series finale before a postgame celebration that includes a Frankie Ballard concert and Fourth of July fireworks presented by LandAir.
