Greeneville Astros News Release

Kingsport, TN - The Greeneville Astros began a three-game road series at the Kingsport Mets on Sunday at Hunter Wright Stadium. While the Astros (7-5) led the Appalachian League West division heading into the series, it was the third-place Mets (6-7) that rallied to a 5-2 win. With the loss, the Astros fell back into a tie with the Elizabethton Twins atop the division.

Makay Nelson, making his third appearance and first start for the Astros, pitched three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. The 20-year-old right-hander, drafted in the 20th round out of the College of Southern Idaho, gave way to the bullpen in the fourth inning with the Astros holding a 2-0 lead.

A leadoff triple in the top of the fourth by Aaron Mizell put the Astros in position to break the scoreless tie. After Connor Goedert knocked Mizell in for the first score, Brauly Mejia got on with a double and was brought home on a Kevin Martir RBI single before the end of the inning.

Goedert and Mizell both went on to finish the night two-for-four at the plate to lead the way for the Astros. However, this is nothing new as both players are among the league leaders in batting average. Goedert is currently tied for second at .500 while Mizell comes in at seventh with a .357 average.

The score remained in the Astros' favor until the Mets evened the game in the sixth on a Dash Winningham two-run homer. Then, the Mets scored on a balk in the seventh to take the lead, and Patrick Mazeika added two more scores on a home run in the eighth.

The Astros got back-to-back singles from Mizell and Goedert to lead off the ninth inning. However, Greeneville was unable to capitalize so Kingsport held on to the lead and took the first win in the series.

Kingsport's starting pitcher Audry German picked up his third win of the young season after going eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Then, Joe Shaw came on in the ninth inning for the save.

The Astros will have plenty of other opportunities against the Mets over the next four weeks as the two teams square off a total of 10 times during that span. The next meeting will take place back in Kingsport on Monday night at 7:00pm.

The Astros are the Appalachian League affiliate of the Houston Astros. For more information, visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
