Red Bull New York News Release
Tim Howard Named Player of the Week: Tim Howard was selected as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for the week ending June 23, 2002. Howard recorded his second consecutive shutout win Saturday as the Metros closed the door on the Chicago Fire with a 1-0 win at Cardinal Stadium. Howard made nine saves on the night, keeping the Fire off the board with some athletic play in key situations. Howard follows Mamadou Diallo who was named Player of the Week last Monday. The clean sheet was Howard's second in a row, and the tenth of his career. He trails only Tony Meola for the all-time MetroStars team lead in shutouts (18).
The Slump in Chicago is Over: The team won only their second game ever on Fire soil in Saturday's 1-0 win in Naperville. The last time they won on the road against Chicago was April 17, 1998 on an Alexi Lalas header at Soldier Field for a 1-0 win in the first meeting-ever between both clubs. The team is 2-5-0 lifetime (includes 2000 playoffs) on the road against the Fire.
Change is Very Good: The MetroStars are 2-0-1 in their last three MLS games, since acquiring Diallo, Andy Williams, and Ted Chronopoulos in a May 24 trade with New England for Diego Serna, Daniel Hernandez, and Brian Kamler.
In three MLS games, the solid play of Diallo (five goals, 1 assist), Williams (four assists), Tab Ramos (two assists), and Tim Howard (2-0-1, 16 saves, 2 SHO) has enabled the MetroStars to trail Columbus by just one point in the Eastern Conference Standings.
The defense has allowed only one goal in its last three league games, posting a +6 (GF: 7, GA: 1) goal differential. They have scored seven straight goals unanswered in this stretch.
First Place MetroStars? The MetroStars will look to climb into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference Standings Wednesday night when they host the Colorado Rapids.
75' Minute Says A Lot: The MetroStars are 3-0-0 when leading in the 75' minute. They are 0-5-0 when trailing in the 75'. They are 2-0-1 when tied in the 75'.
Gotta Love June!: The MetroStars are 2-0-0 (4-0-0 total including exhibitions) in the month of June. In May, the team struggled with a 0-3-1 record in league play.
Metro ESPN2 Broadcasts Now Reach Nine Games This Season: The MetroStars Saturday, July 6 road contest at Columbus has been moved from 7:30 p.m. ET to 4:00 p.m. ET for a nationally televised broadcast on ESPN2. The switch raises the number of games to nine this season on ESPN2. The game was previously scheduled for MSG-TV. Please plan accordingly.
Glasgow Rangers Coming in July to Giants Stadium: The MetroStars will host two doubleheaders involving Scottish club power Glasgow Rangers on July 13 & 20, it was jointly announced by the team and ChampionsWorld, LLC. The two doubleheaders will enable soccer fans to watch the MetroStars in league action against the Chicago Fire (July 13) and the New England Revolution (July 20), followed after each game by the Rangers against opponents to be announced.
The Glasgow Rangers trip to the New York/New area is part of their preseason preparations for the Scottish and UEFA Cup campaign. Their opponents, two prominent club teams from South America, will be confirmed this upcoming Wednesday. Tickets are priced at $25, $35, $45, and $55.
