DALLAS - The Dallas Burn announced today that the team has signed Peruvian defender/midfielder Percy Olivares. Olivares, 34, has most recently been with Sporting Cristal in the Peruvian First Division after spending the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons with Panathinaikos in Greece, where he helped the team to a second place finish in the Champions League each year. Olivares has been training with the team for the past week and will be available for Saturday's game.

"Percy brings a great deal of experience, good technical ability and a lot of pace," said Burn Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "He can play wide on either side in the back or in the midfield. He gives us a great deal of versatility at a lot of different positions."

Olivares has 84 caps with the Peruvian National Team, including the qualifying phase for the 1994, '98 and 2002 World Cups. From 1986-1992, he played with Sporting Cristal, leading the team to the championship in 1988 and 1991. He has also played in Colombia (Deportivo Cali in 1991), Germany (Nuremberg 1992-93), Spain (Tenerife 1993-94), Argentina (Rosario Central in 1994), Mexico (Cruz Azul in 1995), Brazil (Fluminense in 1996) and with Paol Salonika in Greece from 1997-99.

"I am very happy to be a part of the Dallas Burn and MLS," said Olivares. "The Burn appears to be one of the top teams in MLS and, after the success of the United States in the World Cup, people are starting to look at this league with a great deal more respect."

Olivares, who will wear #24 for the Burn, is married and has three children.
