TODAY'S HEADLINES

The Memphis Express took part in padded practice on Tuesday at S.T.A.R. Soccer Complex, hitting the field for two hours beginning at 10:00 am CT.

Tuesday featured more situational scrimmages than Monday's practice. After individual drills and instruction, the offense and defense met for structured live action beginning with 11-on-11s at various down and distances, progressing to red zone work, and finishing with three sets of two-minute drill.

HIGHLIGHTS

WR Kayaune Ross (Kentucky) made a splash in his second day back from injury, making his presence felt by catching passes from all four quarterbacks. Ross snagged a middle slant from QB Troy Cook (UT-Martin) for 15 yards on the first set of 11-on-11s. Through the period, Ross added a screen pass turned upfield for a first down, a toe drag at the sticks on an out, and a 12-yard gain on a comeback route. Once red zone work began, Ross scored on a fade from three yards out. In the two-minute drill, Ross opened the drive for QB Brandon Silvers (Troy) with a five-yard gain.

QB Brandon Silvers (Troy) managed the day's best drive in the two-minute drill, working the ball downfield with completions to WR Kayaune Ross (Kentucky), WR Drew Morgan (Arkansas), WR Fabian Guerra (Fairmont State), RB Zac Stacy (Vanderbilt), and RB Kenny Hilliard (LSU) to set up a successful K Josh Jasper (LSU) field goal from 38 yards.

CB Kadeem Satchell (Emporia State) ended one two-minute drill with an interception, slipping underneath an out route 20 yards downfield. CB Brandon Maiden (Jackson State) contributed a pick of his own during 11-on-11 work, corralling an overthrow the the middle of the field. Newly signed CB Julian Wilson (Oklahoma) made a pass break up during red zone, on an out to the left sideline from five yards.

DL Anthony Johnson (LSU) sniffed out a pair of runs during the 11-on-11 period, shutting down both for minimal gains.

QUOTES

Head Coach Mike Singletary on two-minute drill: "Competition is what I really want to see. All defense and no offense would be a bit concerning and vice versa. I just want to see them compete. The more we compete like today, it just makes us better. We have to change directions now a bit and get back into game mode. We got a chance to see a lot of good things these two days, so we're excited about that."

Head Coach Mike Singletary on defensive alignment and reading assignments: "We bring attention to it, and a lot of guys don't even know that's a possibility, to know what the play is before they run it. Having some guys open their eyes to that is pretty cool. I'm excited about the maturation of our team, our guys competing and learning to compete with one another."

Head Coach Mike Singletary on what he's seeing from the offense "On the offensive side I saw some execution. I saw our receivers getting better. Our receivers are pretty decent blockers. They're still catching the ball well. I saw [Reece Horn] continue to do a good job. Our quarterbacks have to continue to make good decisions. Our O-Line, that's a work in progress, so we've just got to get better."

K Josh Jasper (LSU) on pro football's return to Memphis: "It seems like we're progressing well in practice, but it's all going to come down to how we perform on the field. Being from Memphis, I know my family and a bunch of other families have heard about people buying season tickets and looking forward to it. I hope it catches on in a big way, because I love Memphis, born and raised there, and being able to play in Memphis, for me, it's awesome. As soon as I heard about the team, I knew I wanted to get involved somehow."

DL Latarius Brady (Memphis) on the chance to play in his hometown: "It's going to mean a lot to me. I've got a lot of people excited for me. I've got a lot of people back home looking forward to seeing me play football again. Knowing the situation I was in, with the process of my senior season in college and not getting a chance to go pro. To actually get a chance to play professionally in Memphis, in my city, it's going to be a great opportunity for me."
