AKRON, OH (July 16, 2016) - On a night that began with the Akron Racers celebrating their 15th Season of Play, pitcher Morgan Melloh and the Dallas Charge played the role of spoiler in a 3-0 win for the Charge. Melloh had eight strikeouts in the complete game, two-hit shutout victory.

"When I originally came here to interview I sought out Akron because they do things differently here," Racers manager Brian Levin said. "I'm just thrilled about the opportunity to be here three years. It's a great honor for me."

The Racers (18-12) had made a habit of pulling out late-game heroics in their last three games, pulling ahead in the seventh inning or later in three straight wins, and Akron tried to pull off the trick again on Saturday night as the tying run came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"We struck the ball well and four, five, six times it didn't show up," Levin said. "We could have easily had seven or eight hits."

After Melloh retired the first two batters of the inning, pinch hitter Shellie Robinson (South Carolina-Upstate) raced on base after a third strike was dropped by catcher Kaylyn Castillo and went to the backstop to begin the inning. Right fielder Cassie Tysarczyk (Texas A&M) then drew a walk to put runners on first and second base. Melloh ended the threat when she forced pinch hitter Geri Ann Glasco (Oregon) to ground out to second baseman Kylee Lahners to end the game.

Dallas (10-18) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when third baseman Danielle Henderson led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, center fielder Taylor Gadbois laced a single to left field to score Henderson.

The Charge added a run the next inning when Lahners kicked off the frame with a base hit. Lahners came around to score on a two-out RBI single by first baseman Kaitlyn Richardson.

After Melloh was perfect through the first three innings, the Racers mounted their most serious threat of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Center fielder Taylor Schlopy (Georgia) and third baseman Kelley Montalvo (Alabama) jump started the inning with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, first baseman Sam Fischer drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Melloh worked out of the jam by striking out left fielder Alex Hugo (Georgia) and designated player Jennifer Gilbert (Ball State) to end the inning.

Dallas added the last run of the game when left fielder Ashley Burkhardt led off the top of the fifth inning with a home run.

Akron and the Charge will have the rubber match to their three-game series Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. For ticket information contact the Akron Racers box office at 330-376-8188.
