LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 22, 2003) – A pair of goals by German star Maren Meinert overcame an early CyberRays lead Saturday night and gave the Boston Breakers a 2-1 exhibition victory in the Las Vegas College Showcase.

The CyberRays got on the board first in the seventh minute of action on a goal by Katia with an assist from former Boston midfielder Keri Sanchez, whom the CyberRays obtained in a February trade. Sanchez raced up the right sideline and sent a ball into the penalty box. The ball passed a number of players before Katia jumped all over the opportunity and placed it to the far post.

The CyberRays almost got a second goal when Maren Hendershot broke by the Boston defense. Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, who had four saves for the game, tipped Hendershot's shot wide and Jena Kluegel cleared the loose ball out in the 17th minute of action.

Meinert, Boston's leading scorer in 2002, evened the game in the 22nd minute. French international Stephanie Mugneret-Beghe sent Meinert to the end line to the left of CyberRays keeper Julie Podhrasky. Meinert, with very little room to work, dribbled by a CyberRays defender and curled the ball inside the far post.

Meinert struck again 10 minutes later. She worked a give-and-go with Devvyn Hawkins and ripped a shot from 24-yards out into the upper corner.

Both teams failed to convert chances in the second half. The CyberRays were stopped twice on key saves by Tracy Ducar.

Both teams welcomed their national team players back from the Algarve Cup competition in Portugal. Returning to the Breakers were Kristine Lilly, Kate Sobrero, Angela Hucles, Dagny Mellgren, LeBlanc and Mugneret-Beghe. San Jose had Brandi Chastain return to its lineup. Only Sobrero, LeBlanc, Mugneret-Beghe and Chastain started in the match.

The CyberRays open the WUSA season April 5 with a 7 p.m. Spartan Stadium match against the Philadelphia Charge.
