McWhinney Named Sher-Wood SPHL Player Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, NC (March 16, 2009) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced goaltender Dan McWhinney of the Huntsville Havoc is the Sher-Wood SPHL Player of the Week for March 8-14.

McWhinney, who hails from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, went 3-0-0 for the week, posting a miniscule 0.68 goals against average and.976 save percentage as the Havoc moved back into second place in the SPHL standings.

On Thursday, the fourth-year pro stopped 32 of 33 shots in a 7-1 over Fayetteville. McWhinney came back on Friday to post a 3-1 road win over Columbus, making 36 saves overall and 18 in the second period alone. McWhinney didn't get the start on Saturday at Louisiana, but came on in relief after Mark Sibbald gave up two goals in the first 3:18 of the game. Down 2-0, McWhinney shut the IceGators down the rest of the way, stopping all 14 shots as Huntsville rallied for a 3-2 win.

McWhinney, who began his pro career with the United Hockey League's Fort Wayne Komets, is currently fourth in the SPHL with 14 wins and fifth with a 3.05 goals against average.
