McGarry's Power, Hinds' Speed Lead 'Tugas to Series Win

May 9, 2021 - Florida State League (FSL)
Daytona Tortugas News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - Following a four home run performance on Saturday, Daytona utilized the four-bagger again on Sunday. LF Alex McGarry homered conventionally in the fourth and DH Rece Hinds rapped an inside-the-parker in the fifth, as the Tortugas bested the Palm Beach Cardinals, 7-3, at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Even at one after three, Hinds (1-5, 2 R, HR, RBI) reached base on a fielding error to being the fourth. McGarry (1-3, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SO) proceeded to golf a 2-2 delivery over the fence in right for a two-run home run. His second blast in as many days and professional games put the Tortugas (4-2) in front, 3-1.

An inning later, Daytona posted a four-spot. RF Danny Lantigua's (3-4, R, 2B) outstanding series continued with a leadoff double and scored a batter later on an error. A double by 1B Michel Triana (2-3, R, 2B, BB, SO) set up runners at second and third. The Tortugas drove both men home with a 2B Tyler Callihan (0-3, 2 RBI, BB) ground out and a wild pitch.

The bags now empty, Hinds spun a liner down the right-field line. It squirted to the wall, as the 20-year-old sprinted around the bags. Hinds safely cut the dish before Palm Beach (2-4) could get the ball in for an inside-the-park home run, his third four-bagger of the series, to put the 'Tugas up, 7-1.

A six-run edge was more than enough for Daytona's bullpen to hold. In the ninth, the Cardinals trimmed the deficit to four as two runs scored on a two-out error, but RHP Juan Abril (1.0 IP, H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 SO) induced a pop-up to seal the Tortugas victory.

Palm Beach collected the game's opening tally via an RBI single from DH Carlos Soto (1-4, RBI, SO), but would fail to dent the scoreboard again.

Daytona was able to draw to one all in the top of the third. C Wilfred Astudillo (0-3, 2 R, BB) walked and later scored on a Callihan sacrifice fly to right field.

It was another sparkling day for the 'Tugas bullpen. RHP Brett Lockwood (1.0 IP, BB, SO), RHP Pedro García (3.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 SO), and Abril united to strike out seven batters and did not yield an earned run over five innings of work. García collected victory number one in his team debut.

RHP James Proctor (4.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) impressed in his initial pro start. Throwing three scoreless innings in relief on Tuesday, the Princeton alum issued just one tally over four as a starter on Sunday.

Cardinals RHP Nick Trogrlic-Iverson (4.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 4 ER, BB, 3 SO) was taxed for six runs on four hits after hurling five shutout innings on Opening Night. The right-hander took his first defeat of the year.

The Tortugas return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark and will roll out the green carpet for their long-awaited home opener against the St. Lucie Mets, Low-A affiliate of the New York Mets, on Tuesday, May 11. It will be a Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Radiology Associates Imaging, as the Tortugas will raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Fans will also be able to enjoy tacos starting at just $2 as a part of Taco Tuesday in partnership with Jimmy Hula's. Gates will open at 6 p.m. ET. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Season ticket, multi-game plans, group packages, and more are currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
