Geneva Red Wings News Release

GENEVA: Join the Geneva Red Wings as we celebrate this summer as McDonough Park turns 60 years old. The Red Wings are set to return on June 2, 2018 for opening day against the Newark Pilots. This is the third season that the Geneva Red Wings are a part of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.

In 1958, a stadium was built at the current site and called Shuron Park. In 1977, Shuron Park was renamed McDonough Park in honor of Joseph McDonough, a long-time franchise General Manager and former Geneva police chief. Over the years, many notable MLB players called Geneva home for a summer or two including Hall of Famer Tony Perez (1960/61) and MLB all-time hits leader Pete Rose (1960) as well as Cesar Tovar (1961), Art Shamsky (1960), Paul Casanova (1964) and Jamie Moyer (1984).

During the 2018 summer season, we have plans to honor this historic milestone of 60 years at McDonough Park. Geneva Red Wings owner, Bob Ohmann states "I have such great memories of McDonough Park when my dad would bring me out to see all the future major leaguers. The fact that this historic ballpark still stands and there is still baseball being played here is so exciting to me."

We will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the 1958 team on June 22, 2018 as the Geneva Red wings take on the Newark Pilots. We will have some of the 1958 team players on hand during the game as well as other festivities.

McDonough Park has also seen a few upgrades for the 2018 season including a new scoreboard and sound system. The park also has an updated concession stand and will now feature a new "Tiki Hut" serving beer.
