McCartney and Kaufman Re-Sign for 2011

The Wichita Wild of the Indoor Football League (IFL) continued to build the 2011 squad by re-signing two players from the defensive side of the ball. The Wild re-signed defensive lineman James McCartney and defensive back Brandon Kaufman. The duo from Bethel College will be playing in their second season with the Wild.

McCartney recorded 22.5 tackles and finished second on the team in sacks with five during his rookie campaign. His five sacks marked the second most in a single season in Wild history.

McCartney finished his college career at Bethel in Newton, KS in the fall of 2009. McCartney was a four-year starter for the Threshers, earning All-KCAC honors each season. In 2008, McCartney was named Co-KCAC Defensive Player of the Year. In 2009, the Hesston, KS native was named KCAC Defensive Player of the Year and an NAIA All-American. McCartney finished 6th in the nation in tackles for loss with 17.5 and 13th in the nation in forced fumbles. McCartney finished his career with 138 tackles and 16 sacks.

Kaufman compiled 32.5 tackles in 2010 and was second on the team in interceptions with four. Kaufman also recorded a key interception in the Wild's playoff victory over Rochester.

After graduating from Bethel in 2008, Kaufman served as Assistant DB coach for two years for the Threshers. The Moundridge, KS native starred at safety for four years and recorded 23 career interceptions. As a senior in 2007 he was named to the NAIA All-Decade team by Team Victory Sports Network, named KCAC Player of the Year, recognized as KCAC Defensive Player of the Year, named an All-American, and was a unanimous All-KCAC selection. His senior campaign resulted in a KCAC championship for Bethel while recording nine interceptions in eight games.

In 2006, Kaufman was elected to 1st team All-KCAC and awarded All-American honors, while leading Bethel to a record of 9-2 and a KCAC Championship. During Kaufman's sophomore season, he achieved All-KCAC honors while returning punts and starting at safety. He also played in every game at defensive back of his freshman season in 2004.

Kaufman played his high school football at Moundridge High School. He was named 11-man Defensive Player of the Year by the Hutch News, Elite 11 by the Wichita Eagle, and received All-State honors as a senior.
