Rochester Rhinos News Release
Rochester, NY - The Rochester Rhinos announced today the transfer of the goalkeeper John McCarthy to the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer.
McCarthy spent the 2014 season with the Rhinos and earned both USL PRO Rookie of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the league with a 0.72 goals against average and 10 shutouts in only 18 league games played. He posted an 8-4-6 record with 41 saves and allowed only 13 goals.
"John had a very good first year with us. He was well deserving of All-League status, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Rookie of the Year awards. We felt that he had a huge upside and was one of the reasons we brought him in," said Rhinos head coach Bob Lilley. "We provide a platform for players to grow and mature. When we can help a player grow, mature, and move to the next level, we are happy for them. It's a big opportunity for him and hopefully he can take advantage of it," said Lilley.
In college, John was four-year starter with LaSalle where he was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 performer, an NSCAA Scholar All-American and was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list heading into his senior year.
