January 5, 2005 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release
Boise, ID (January 5, 2005) â Michigan Mayhem guard Darrick Martin signed with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, it was announced today by the Continental Basketball Association League Office and Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. The signing marks the fifth CBA-to-NBA call-up of the 2004-05 season, and the first in the history of the Mayhem organization and first year Head Coach Reggie Fox.
"We are very happy for Darrick as well as for the Mayhem organization," stated Fox. "He came to this team and gave us a lift with his leadership. He made my job a little easier on the court since we think a lot a like, and I am very, very proud of him."
Martin averaged 14.9 points per contest in 17 games played (16 starts) for the Mayhem. He also ranked 5th in the league in assists with 6.9 per game, while adding 2.4 rebounds per contest and shooting 90.9 percent (50 of 55) from the free-throw line and 32.0 percent (24 of 75) from behind the three-point line.
Last season, Martin averaged 17.4 points and 7.4 assists per game in 27 games played with both the Yakima Sun Kings and the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He received two call-ups to the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves (1/30/04, 4/1/04) during the regular season, playing in 16 games and averaging 3.4 points and 1.4 assists per contest. He also played in 16 NBA playoff games, including starts in the last three games of the Western Conference Finals, where he posted 3.1 points in 11.4 minutes per game.
The 1992 UCLA alum has played three seasons in the CBA, averaging 19.2 points and 7.4 assists per game in 84 games played. Martin began his career with the Skyforce during the 1994-95 season, where he was named to the CBA All-League Second Team, and in 2003 he was named CBA Playoff MVP after leading the Yakima Sun Kings to the CBA Title. He has also played in over nine seasons in the NBA, averaging 7.9 points and 3.2 assists in 415 games, including three seasons (201 games) with the Clippers (1996-97 through 1998-99).
Martin is filling a roster spot left open when the Clippers waived guard Kirk Penney on January 3.
