MAYHEM GAME RECAP: Mayhem Out-Gun Marksmen in Second Straight
December 18, 2017 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release
MACON, GA- Forward Darren McCormick recorded his first career and goaltender Greg Dodds earned his first career shutout in the Macon Mayhem's 9-0 win over the Fayetteville Marksmen on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring started quickly, as Stephen Pierog scored and triggered the teddy bear toss with 18:19 left in the first period, but that was the only goal of the opening frame.
The floodgates opened in the second period, as the Mayhem put a five-spot on the Marksmen to take a 6-0 lead. Ryan Salkeld and Darren McCormick scored two goals apiece in the second period, while Paul Russell scored his second goal in just his second game with the Mayhem.
There were four different fights in the period, including three at once. Dennis Sicard and Kyle McNeil were the initial fight, while Seth Ronsberg squared up against Brad Drobot and Jeff Sanders went toe-to-toe with Chris Stemke. Sicard, Sanders, Drobot and Stemke all received game-misconducts for continuing an altercation. After the Mayhem scored their sixth goal, Stephen Pierog was on the better end of a fight against John Schiavo right off the faceoff.
The Mayhem pitched in three more goals in the third period to secure their 9-0 victory. Dennis Sicard scored a power play, John Siemer scored a short-handed goal, and McCormick scored to record his first career professional hat trick.
NOTABLE STATS
Greg Dodds earned his second straight start in net and his second victory. He saved all 29 shots he faced to secure his first career professional shutout and the first shutout for the Mayhem this season.
Darren McCormick scored three goals, earning his first career professional hat trick. It was the second hat trick of the season for the Mayhem and the first since October 27 when Jake Trask tallied one against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs.
John Siemer's third period goal was the Mayhem's first short-handed goal of the season. The Mayhem had two short-handed goals all of last season, and both were scored by Daniel Gentzler.
In two games this weekend, the Mayhem outscored the Marksmen 19-2, and they outshot them 94-53 in the process. Fayetteville has now given up 99 goals in 20 games, and the Mayhem have scored 76 in 18 games.
