SEA DOGS SPLIT THE SERIES ON SUNDAY The Portland Sea Dogs split the series against the Somerset Patriots on Sunday with a 3-1 victory in front of a sold-out crowd at Hadlock Field. In the bottom of the third inning, Rosier led off with a single to right field then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, Anthony Siegler. Phillip Sikes then worked a walk. Sikes and Rosier executed a double steal, allowing Rosier to score and Portland led, 1-0. Rafaela then drove home Sikes with an RBI single to right field while Rafaela scored on an RBI groundout by Stephen Scott. Trey Sweeney hit an RBI single to right field in the seventh inning to bring home Brandon Lockridge and the Patriots trailed, 3-1.
RAFAELA RUNS INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS Ceddanne Rafaela stole a franchise record six bases in Portland's loss on Saturday afternoon. The previous record was four and set by Jeremy Hazelbacker on July 22, 2012 in New Hampshire.
CEDDANNE ISN'T THE ONLY STORY The Sea Dogs also set a new team record with nine stolen bases on Saturday against Somerset.. Rafaela had six, Phillip Sikes had two, and Koss finished with one stolen base. The previous record was six on July 22, 2012 in New Hampshire.
RUN, RUN, RUN The Sea Dogs currently lead all of Double-A with 82 stolen bases. The three top Eastern League leaders are all Sea Dogs with Ceddanne Rafaela (19) leading the way then Corey Rosier (18) and Phillip Sikes (15). As a team, Portland swiped 16 bases in their last two games.
NOT A BAD AVERAGE The Sea Dogs rank second in the Eastern League in batting average with .245. The Reading Fightin Phils lead the league and are batting .257. Portland also leads the league in doubles (61) and triples (61).
LOOKING AT THE GOATS The Yard Goats are in third place in the Eastern League, 4.5 games behind the Sea Dogs. They most recently split a six-game series in Binghamton against the Rumble Ponies and were outscored 39 to 35. Three of Colorado's six top prospects are with the Yard Goats including number one overall prospect Zac Veen, number two prospect Drew Romo and number six, Warming Bernabel.
WHERE DO WE STAND After splitting the six-game series against the Somerset Patriots last week at Hadlock Field, the Sea Dogs remain in first place of the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. They currently lead the second-place Patriots by 1.5 games while the Hartford Yard Goats and New Hampshire Fisher Cats are tied for third place, 4.5 games out of first place.
THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY May 16, 2016 - Andrew Benintendi made his Double-A debut, going 0-for-4, but Aaron Wilkerson hurled 7.1 scoreless on just 2 hits and fanned 8, as the Sea Dogs beat the Fisher Cats 2-0 at Hadlock Field. Nate Freiman gave Portland a 2-0 lead in the sixth with his first homer in the Red Sox system.
PITCHING PREVIEW RHP Chih-Jung (CJ) Liu will take the mound for the Sea Dogs tonight in Hartford. He last pitched on May 11th vs Somerset. In 5.1 innings, he allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two. In his last 17.1 innings, he has allowed just two runs on six hits.
